With August days ushering in back to school shopping, it is the perfect time to lead your learners back into the swing of learning by promoting “Beyond the Classroom” connections. Just a few moments each day will reconnect their inquiry skills, as well as inspiring the thrill and joy for new discoveries.
Primary learners enjoy a vast range of explorations, from reading to math, these Internet links will provide enough skill practice for any young mind. Just set the timer for 20 minutes, help them get connected and watch them as they explore new learning avenues. For beginning readers Starfall is your best connection for learning the alphabet and reading small passages. When it comes to spelling, Word World never fails to inspire interactive learning with giggles. Traveling back in time to discover America’s history, try Ben’s Guide. Every young mind enjoys discovering the world around them, Discovery Kids brings animals-nature-space straight into your home. Try the Count On connection for early mathematics. For added explorations and skill practice try Gavyn’s favorite picks, grandchildren will beg for online learning time when you save their favorite sites.
Intermediate thru High School learners can find amazing skill building sites for all levels of learning by heading to their school library webpage. There is no better resource than your school’s library, 24/7, your school’s Librarian is your best resource and 21st century learning is only a click away at every school’s webpage. For Green Mt SD, their new interactive Library site is just making the leap into the beyond the school doors and into “real time” learning resourcing. Once your student explores their school’s Library page, introduce them to the Teen pages at your local public libraries. Consider stopping by your public library and checking out a PlayAway for those late summer trips or family dentist appointments. Don’t forget to explore educational sites as well, PBS is an amazing resource for every research topic that might be assigned.
Making the book connection, just last week Portland’s famous book character, Ramona, was released into theaters. Why not read Beverly Cleary’s series about this delightfully inquisitive young lady, her neighborhood, her school, and all of her escapades.
As parents, you are raising your students during one of the most amazing generations. Their learning experiences are not limited to your bookshelves or their classroom experiences. Raising 21st Century learners includes inspiring technology literacy including safe surfing, what makes an Internet connection reliable, using primary sources, and proper citations of resources. Get online, find great connections, you know your students better than anyone else. Inspire their learning beyond bookshelves.
Welcome back to school and enjoy your journey of discovery,
