Hills covers it all, nearly every hole plays up or down some hill, or across a slope. Located in the rolling hills east of Cleveland on Mayfield road, this course has an old school look and feel.
This is basic golf, at its best, the fairways are generic grass, but well maintained. The greens for and old school course are surprisingly large, and many have considerable slope to them, the course follows the terrain, and so do the greens tend to follow the prevailing slopes. The greens are a moderate speed, but have excellent turf and usually putt true. However the grain can get you and some of the slopes surely will. The bunkering is truly old school hugging the sides of the greens like white brackets. The rough is ugly, but that is old school too, different grasses challenge you, so keeping it in the fairway is a real good idea.

This is a shotmakers course, but it has some big holes. The first hole is all the par 5 you want, no point in cutting over the lake, you can’t get home anyway. The 4th hole is another par 5, you must keep the tee shot to the right to set up the second down the hill. Numbers 6 and 7 are all the par 4 you want, number 7 has a creek to keep you honest off the tee, so pay attention to the yardage off the tee. The back nine starts with a couple short holes a drivable par 4 and a downhill par 3. But then the length returns with another hard par 4. The front is 3600 yards, big by any standard but the back at 3000 yards is no slouch, the hills are a great equalizer, and the greens tend to slope more than the front. Many holes are tight and tree lined, so position and accuracy are key.
They have a huge banquet facility and a pool for the members. The clubhouse is small and serves a great corned beef ( I need more of these, shot 2 under on the back ). There is no real proshop, just a few tables, and a patio outside to take care of you at the turn or before your round. The course has a small practice green and a nice basic range, one of the few where you can really see where your ball lands.

The staff here is very friendly and helpful. The ownership after having the property returned to their control is committed to returning this course to its former self, plans are for a new cart path system I look forward to seeing. They have a de-goosing system in place that seems to be working. Throw in some fairway bunkers, slightly faster greens, and this will be a great place to go. The views are already great, and the bones of the course are excellent.
