The commercials for attorneys in Orlando are increasing to the amount that they may be giving attorneys a bad name. That is assuming that the few unethical attorneys out there haven’t already created a bad reputation. One such law firm which will remain nameless may have an astronomical advertising budget because their name and slogan seem to be everywhere in Central Florida. The Central Florida TV stations are riddled with attorney commercials from the same five law firms, giving rise to the need for a discussion regarding attorney advertising.
Much like a little child asking you a question and repeating “why?” like a scratched record, attorney advertisements can be found in almost all commercial breaks in Orlando. Sit down in front of your television to watch the local news and count how many attorney or lawyer referral commercials are played. Similarly, count how many car dealership commercials appear. Interestingly enough, the numbers may be eerily similar. The advertisements serve as a reminder that legal service is a business.
The image the amount of commercials may portray perpetuates the image of attorneys being focused solely on money. Although law is a business with profit being a goal, at which point does that deter from the purposeful nature of the services attorneys provide to those in need? The goals of the profession should be to who help people who are in need of legal assistance in a competent, purposeful and ethical manner. The image that many people may see is that of an attorney wishing to have clients on a conveyor belt- giving the attorney money and hitting the road. This image portrays an incomplete picture of the profession.
The attorneys with the large advertising budget are often the tort attorneys. These attorneys sue individuals and companies for negligent acts against the client. These clients, for the most part, will not need that attorney’s services again because the probability that the client will be injured in a slip and fall accident again is very low. Lost are the voices and images of the attorneys who work in the field of estate planning, family law, and real estate law. Those are the attorneys with an often steady client list and the ability to build a relationship with their clients.
As a law student, you will learn the rules of the local bar association regarding advertising. There are no guidelines yet regarding the amount of attorney advertisements, yet the public is setting their own guidelines. Rules or no, the public does not want to have nightmares about another slip and fall attorney advertisement.
Whether true or false, the excessive advertising creates an image regarding attorneys and the public is growing weary of it.
