A person’s horoscope gives all sorts of clues to what makes him tick, and if he has issues with emotional or mental extremes they can be found here. First of all, the Moon and Mercury are the most important indicators of how a person functions. The Moon rules the brain and the emotions. Mercury rules communications and the active thinking processes.
All of the signs have their positive and negative qualities. You can find nutcases under every sign. Gemini can be flakey and mentally capricious, for example. But when the Sun is in one of the water signs, Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, the person is usually more sensitive and emotional. Water signs are extremely sympathetic and thoughtful of others as a rule. This can be turned inside out and they can just as easily feel sorry for themselves. The Moon and Mercury in water signs usually indicate changeability, moodiness, and ups and downs of elation and sadness, if afflicted. Conditions include nervousness, depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol addiction, bipolar illness, personality changes (schizophrenia) or violent behavior. The person becomes unable to manage his daily affairs, sustain relationships or hold down a job.
Example aspects that suggest difficulty are Sun square Uranus, Neptune or Pluto, Moon square Mercury, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto, Mercury square Uranus, Neptune or Pluto.
I once dated a man from Hawthorne, Passaic County, who had bipolar illness, also known as manic depression. He was diagnosed later in life after a nervous breakdown. He was a Cancer, moody and sensitive to start with. He was sweet, sentimental and affectionate but when under the spell of an episode, forgetful and lethargic. He had the Moon conjunct Neptune square the Sun and Mercury. Right off the bat, the Moon and Neptune combination can make a person subject to depression and lose his grip on reality. He was basically a fine person and we were good friends, but the illness put a hold on his life and eventually kept him from working.
Now, if you are born under one of these signs, it doesn’t automatically mean you are unstable, so don’t be too concerned. You might be well balanced and have everything under control, especially if you have some planets in strong earth signs, or a well aspected Saturn. My friend from Hawthorne had a good Saturn and this helped him sometimes to maintain a more cheerful state of mind and get out socially. Many people have some mental issue they live with that doesn’t interfere with their normal functions. They have coping mechanisms and ways of adjusting. By sheer willpower they get dressed up in something bright and push themselves out the door every morning. As a Cancer myself, I live by that rule! According a psychic I recently met, depression is a decision. Decide to be sad or to be joyful.
