About 7 percent of adults will experience some depression in any given year. We know that at least some kinds depression have a heritable component, i.e., that genes help explain why depression strikes some and not others. Depression saps productivity and decreases mental accuity. Depressed people lose interest in food, socializing, and even sex. Depressed parents may struggle to care for their children. Hardly a recipe for fitness.
During pregnancy hormones can actually trigger emotions and make it harder to deal with depression. Taking antidepressants during pregnancy can be detrimental to the developement of the fetus but not taking them can be more detrimental to the mother.
Is treatment important during pregnancy?
Yes. If you don’t take proper care of depression during pregnancy, you may put your health — and your baby’s health — at risk. If you’re depressed, you may not have the energy to take good care of yourself. You may not seek optimal prenatal care or eat the healthy foods your baby needs to thrive. You may turn to smoking or drinking alcohol. The price of untreated depression may be high, including premature birth, low birth weight, developmental problems and an increased risk of postpartum depression.
So what antidepressants are safe to take during pregnancy?
Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft, and Wellbutrin according to the FDA. Any other antidepressants should be avoided due to the unknown affects to the fetus or the known affects to the fetus.
There is also help out there for women of Broward County. The Healthy Mothers-Healthy Babies program of Broward County has a Maternal Nurturing program for women who are dealing with maternal depression. Their goal is to service pregnant women and mothers with children ages 0-2 who are experiencing maternal depression. The program, provided in conjunction with the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, aims to prevent child abuse and neglect by improving and replacing poor parenting behaviors with nurturing ones. In-home one-on-one instruction is provided pre-and post-natal. Psychosocial counseling is provided on an individual basis. You can reach them at 954-765-0550 if you need help during pregnancy.
Being depressed is bad enough however being depressed during pregnancy can be life threatening. Don’t let the blues get you down. If you are pregnanct and depressed, first talk to your doctor about your medication, secondly get some counseling to help you get through this, and if you don’t have a partner to help you then find someone who can.
