Over 125,000 people have now “liked” a new Facebook page, NO TO THE MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO, and are leaving comments blistered with anti-Islamic bigotry.
Some of the more repeatable examples (that do not include various expletives and extreme hate-speech):
“This would be such an insult to America.”
“Building a mosque at ground zero is the ultimate insult to those who died in this tragic event.”
“Everywhere now, the tentacles of Islam are reaching—our national heritage and pride being destroyed and unraveled in its wake, with our own politicians allowing it to happen!”
The assumption of there being a brand of American, the “we”, that specifically does not and cannot include Muslim Americans, is the most disturbing aspect of a growing tide of religious bigotry in the USA, that perfectly serves the interests of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
The latter have always painted America’s rights as a mere cover for Christian domination, and even repression of Islamic rights, and now the religious bigots seem hell-bent to prove Osama bin Laden absolutely correct in that assessment about the frailty of American freedom.
The real insult to America is of course the notion that the USA is such a weak nation that the building of a mosque near Ground Zero would be intolerably insulting. What would be the nature of the insult exactly?
The mosque could only be understood as an insult if one accepts these extremely dubious premises as correct:
1. The entire religion of Islam, over 1.5 billion adherents in the world, attacked the United States on 9/11, and is currently at war with the USA.
2. Every Muslim American is therefore a potential terrorist, in support of his faith’s war on the USA, and particularly the war on Christianity, which the USA is supposed to defend.
3. Thus, the building of an Islamic mosque near Ground Zero can only be seen as an insulting provocation of real, Christian Americans, who will never forget that it was Islam that started this war.
Of course, none of those three premises is correct. That anybody could for a moment think they any of them is true, is attributable to the massive right-wing propaganda that has been spewed for years encouraging people to think such bigoted and hateful things.
The situation has gotten so bad, that the Bill of Rights in the USA is now under assault by its own people. That is a far more perilous danger to the freedom of Americans, who have decided to trade their freedom for the comforts of hatred and fear.
