For years now, fans of FOX’s dearly departed Arrested Development have been waiting for a feature film version of the show to arrive in theaters. The show’s creator, Mitch Hurwitz, has claimed to be working on the script, making the necessary deals, and getting all the cast members accounted for on countless occasions, but just two months ago comedian David Cross admitted that it wasn’t likely ever going to happen. Now Hurwitz is back, and he swears that he’s going to start writing the Arrested Development script any minute now. Should we believe him, or is this more smoke and mirrors that will only lead to heartbreak? Let’s hear Hurwitz out below, my gentle Examiner readers…
I’ve probably written this article three or four times at this point, but on the off chance that there’s some validity to a new series of quotes attributed to Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz, we’re going to go through it once again. For years now, director Ron Howard and Hurwitz have claimed that they have every intention of making an Arrested Development movie, and during that time virtually every cast member on the show has shown support for the idea. Nothing’s ever gone past the “Hey, you know what would be fun? Making an Arrested Development movie!” stage, but– once again– it sounds like we may be close:
Believe it or not, we have started the script. We’re taking a little abeyance while we get [new show Running Wilde] up and running. But it is our absolute next priority and we can’t wait to do it. Believe it or not, I do not enjoy teasing our wonderful and devoted audience, which is one reason it appears that I’ve been so cagey about this,” he said. “It’s just that I don’t want to promise what I can’t deliver.”
Running Wilde is, of course, the upcoming FOX comedy series starring Will Arnett (who infamously played Gob Bluth on Arrested Development). Just today, we learned that David Cross was joining the Running Wilde cast, making the show an Arrested Development reunion of sorts. Perhaps once they’ve gotten several of the show’s heavy-hitters into one room it’ll light a fire under Hurwitz’ ass. Speaking of Will Arnett, he tells GQ.com:
Yes, it’s happening.”
We’ll believe it when we see it, guys, but we really, really want to see it. I’ve been rewatching Arrested Development episodes lately, and– as fans of the show surely know– that only makes all this waiting more difficult. Here’s hoping that Hurwitz and company can get this thing over and done with so we can stop writing this particular article over and over.
As per usual, allow me to tell all the people reading this who’ve never seen an episode of Arrested Development to get off their asses, get in the car, and head to the nearest Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or wherever it is that you purchase your DVDs. Arrested Development is, hands down, the greatest comedy that’s ever appeared on American television. Just trust me on this one.
