The race for California State Treasurer is a crucial one, particularly this year, when our Statewide unemployment rate is at 12.3% and our budget deficit is approximately $19 billion.
In California, the State Treasurer has responsibilities in the areas of investment and finance and is the State’s lead asset manager, banker, and financier. The State Treasurer is a chairperson or member of numerous important boards, commissions, and authorities, such as the State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Incumbent Bill Lockyer was elected California’s 32nd State Treasurer in November 2006. As State Treasurer, Bill Lockyer’s priority is the proper and appropriate management of taxpayer dollars. Toward that end, Bill Lockyer’s actions have saved billions of taxpayer dollars following the 2008 economic crisis. He has called for meaningful budget and credit rating reform as well as independent citizen oversight. He championed the purchase of California bonds through Buy California Bonds, a new and innovative website.
Bill Lockyer is a strong advocate for consumer rights, environmental protection, and the creation of green jobs through clean energy. He has authored landmark environmental legislation, including a bill that established a Bay Trail encircling San Francisco and San Pablo Bays.
Prior to serving as the California State Treasurer, Bill Lockyer served as the California Attorney General from 1999-2006. As Attorney General, he created and maintained a state-of-the-art DNA forensic crime laboratory. He established the Megan’s Law website to identify sex offenders and addressed Medi-Cal fraud. He also sponsored significant hate crimes legislation.
Before serving as California’s Attorney General, Bill Lockyer spent 25 years in the California Legislature. He served in the California State Senate and was Senate President pro Tempore. He also served in the California State Assembly and was a member of the San Leandro School Board.
Given Bill Lockyer’s impressive achievements and years in public service, he is arguably one of the best positioned politicians to serve the State of California.
Bill Lockyer, who was born in 1941 in Hayward, California, graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Political Science. He also graduated from the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. In addition, he obtained a teaching credential from California State University, Hayward. He is married and has two children.
