Last year thousands of zombies swarmed the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver for the fourth annual Denver Zombie Crawl. According to the event’s organizer Daniel Newman, this year’s Denver Zombie Crawl will be even bigger.
This year, the Crawl will undergo a few changes. First off, the Crawl will start earlier in the day with a separate event for all the zombie hunters who would otherwise show up to slay some zombies. “People shooting and taking down folks, that’s what caused a bunch of the problems with the cops last year,” said Newman. “So this year, we are going to organize some sort of off-site game just for them.”
The “problems with the cops” Newman is referring to came in the form of crowds of zombies mobbing MallRide buses, disturbing non-participants, and leaving damages to the tune of a $1000 clean-up bill from the city. Newman recently had a heart-to-heart with the Denver Chief of Police. “He’s totally supportive as long as there isn’t chaos,” Newman assured.
The atmosphere of the Denver Zombie Crawl will also be a bit different this year. The Denver Film Society will be screening an undisclosed zombie movie in the park before the Crawl, and Newman has invited local zombie-related vendors to join in. “I want the whole pre-Crawl to be a zombie carnival,” Newman said. The family-friendly atmosphere will continue in the daylight hours up to the actual Crawl. After the Crawl, there will be a 21+ after party with adult beverages.
Denver will have to beat out this July’s Seattle Zombie Crawl, which drew a whopping 4,233 registered zombies, to set the new world record. Newman is confident that Colorado’s zombie enthusiasts can rise from their graves to the occasion.
The date for the 2010 Denver Zombie Crawl has been set for October 23rd, which is (not coincidentally) the birthday of your very own Denver Zombie Examiner. I can’t think of a better way to spend my birthday than surrounded by over 4,000 of my closest undead friends.
The 2010 Denver Zombie Crawl is only a few short months away, so hide your children and load the shotgun —or don your fake blood and start moaning for BRAAAAINS, if that’s your thing— because it’s going to be one killer party.
